Coimbatore: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) officials executed a surprise raid at the Coimbatore Central Regional Transport Office (RTO) on Thursday, confiscating unaccounted cash totaling Rs 63,100. This operation was part of a statewide crackdown, with DVAC teams conducting simultaneous raids at multiple RTOs across various districts in Tamil Nadu.
Operation Details
A 14-member team, led by DVAC Additional Superintendent of Police (ADSP) Rajesh and including three inspectors, targeted the Coimbatore Central RTO situated opposite the police training school on Balasundaram Road. The raid was prompted by intelligence reports indicating that brokers were collecting hefty bribes from the public for services such as driving licenses, vehicle registrations, and fitness certificates.
Seizure and Interrogations
During the search, DVAC officials examined over five driving school cars parked on the premises and interrogated several brokers. The operation resulted in the seizure of Rs 63,100 in unaccounted cash. A DVAC official disclosed that the majority of the money was recovered from brokers, with only Rs 2,000 in unaccounted cash taken from an RTO official.
Investigation Underway
“A detailed investigation will be conducted, and a case will be registered against individuals who accepted bribes,” an official stated. Authorities are currently scrutinizing documents seized during the raid as part of the ongoing investigation.
Background
The DVAC’s statewide drive aims to curb corruption in RTO offices, where bribery has been a persistent issue. The raid in Coimbatore underscores the agency’s commitment to rooting out malpractices and ensuring transparency in public services.
