The European Union has lifted its negative travel advisory for Assam, except in parts of the state where the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) is in force. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this on Saturday, stating that EU Ambassador to India Herve Delphin informed the Assam chief secretary about the decision, effective from Friday, June 20.
EU Advisory Lifted After Years
The negative travel advisory, which had been in place for several years, discouraged EU citizens from traveling to Assam due to security concerns. The lifting of the advisory is seen as a significant vote of confidence in the improved law and order situation in the state.
Exclusions Under AFSPA
However, the advisory remains in effect for areas still under the purview of AFSPA. These regions, primarily in certain districts of Upper Assam and along the border, continue to be considered sensitive. The state government has been working to gradually withdraw AFSPA from several districts, citing improved security conditions.
CM Himanta's Statement
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to the EU for the decision. He noted that the development reflects the success of the state's efforts in maintaining peace and stability. Sarma also reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring the safety of all visitors and residents alike.
Impact on Tourism and Economy
The lifting of the advisory is expected to boost tourism and economic activities in Assam. The state, known for its tea gardens, wildlife sanctuaries, and cultural heritage, has been actively promoting itself as a safe destination for international travelers. Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, anticipating an increase in tourist arrivals from European countries.
Background
The negative travel advisory was originally issued by the EU due to concerns over insurgency and ethnic violence in Assam. Over the past few years, the state has witnessed a significant decline in such incidents, leading to the gradual normalization of travel advisories from various countries.
