Ex-Kolkata mayor's former OSD arrested in warehouse collapse

The former Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to ex-Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim was arrested on Thursday in connection with a deadly warehouse collapse that occurred earlier this month. The arrest marks a significant development in the case, which has sparked political controversy in West Bengal.

Arrest and Charges

The accused, identified as a close aide of Hakim, was taken into custody by the Kolkata Police after questioning. He is alleged to have facilitated illegal construction approvals that led to the collapse of a multi-storey warehouse in the Tiljala area, killing at least 12 workers and injuring 15 others. Police sources said the OSD was directly involved in bypassing building safety norms.

CM's Allegations

Without naming him directly, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged on Wednesday that no building plan in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation could be cleared without the approval of a person known as 'Kali'. She hinted at a nexus between builders and civic officials, stating, "Those who think they are above the law will face consequences." Banerjee's remarks came during a press conference where she announced a high-level inquiry into the collapse.

Political Reactions

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seized on the arrest, demanding a CBI investigation. BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar said, "This is just the tip of the iceberg. The entire municipal administration is corrupt." The ruling Trinamool Congress, however, defended the arrest, calling it proof of the government's commitment to justice.

Warehouse Collapse Details

The warehouse, storing chemicals and textiles, collapsed on June 15 during a thunderstorm. Rescue operations lasted 48 hours. According to the fire department, the building lacked proper structural reinforcements and had been constructed without valid permits. The owner of the warehouse, who is also absconding, faces charges of culpable homicide.

Impact and Next Steps

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has since launched a drive to identify and seal illegal buildings. At least 200 structures have been flagged for violations. The arrested OSD is expected to be produced in court on Friday, where police will seek custody for further interrogation.
