In a significant breakthrough, Kolkata police have apprehended five individuals in connection with a brazen daylight shooting that spread panic at the Rail Quarters complex in Bhatpara. The incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, is suspected to be the result of a violent turf war between rival gangs.
Panic Grips Residential Complex
The tranquility of a Sunday afternoon was shattered when a group of motorcycle-borne assailants unleashed gunfire at the Rail Quarters complex near Nimbagan. According to police reports, the miscreants fired at least four rounds before swiftly fleeing the scene, leaving residents in a state of fear and confusion. The area falls under ward number 6 of the Bhatpara Municipality.
Swift Police Action and Arrests
Responding promptly to the threat, law enforcement agencies launched extensive search operations across multiple localities including Bhatpara, Naihati, Kankinara, and Jagaddal. This coordinated effort led to the arrest of five suspects by Monday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sumit Biswas, Bikash Ghosh, Jhantu Das, Sushanta Pal alias Babusona, and Biplab. A senior officer from the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate confirmed that the Barrackpore court remanded all five accused to police custody for seven days on Monday itself, allowing for a thorough interrogation.
Gang Rivalry Suspected as Motive
Preliminary investigations strongly point towards an ongoing gang rivalry as the root cause of the attack. Police sources indicate that the shooting was likely a violent manifestation of a turf war, intended to establish dominance or retaliate in the area. To prevent any further escalation of violence and to reassure the public, authorities have since deployed a police picket at the sensitive location.
The case remains under active investigation as police work to identify and apprehend the remaining accomplices involved in the alarming incident.
