Goa PSI Transferred After Family Protests Custodial Death

Panaji/Valpoi: Following a protest march led by the family of a 28-year-old man and community members to the Valpoi police station on Friday, the police sub-inspector (PSI) investigating the case was transferred to the reserve line at the North Goa district headquarters.

Family Alleges Unfair Investigation

The family of the deceased, Moin Shaikh, alleged that the investigating officer had not acted fairly while probing a complaint lodged against Shaikh. They demanded his suspension.

A senior police officer told TOI that apart from PSI Prathamesh Gawas being transferred from the Valpoi police station, the other demands raised by the family were later met.

Custodial Violence Allegations

Marzina Aga, Shaikh’s cousin, said the police took Shaikh into custody after the family of a girl, with whom he was friends, filed a complaint alleging he assaulted her. Aga also accused the police of beating Shaikh while in custody, leading him to die by suicide at home after being released.

Shaikh’s family said they were not informed about his arrest but learned about it through external sources and rushed to the police station. Aga further alleged that the police did not have the girl, whom Shaikh was accused of assaulting, medically examined. “Police implicated him in the case,” she said.
