Hyderabad Conman Poses as IPS/IAS Officer, Dupes Landlord in Rent Scam
Hyderabad conman impersonates IPS officer, cheats landlord

In a startling revelation from Hyderabad, a house owner has approached the police, claiming to be the latest victim of a serial conman who impersonates top Indian bureaucrats. This comes over a month after the Film Nagar police initially arrested the fraudster.

Landlord Discovers Tenant's Deceptive Identity

The complainant, a landlord, stated that B Shashikanth had rented a flat in a gated community in 2022, presenting himself as a senior bureaucrat working in Delhi. According to the police complaint, Shashikanth allegedly defaulted on rent payments from August 2025 and subsequently became untraceable. However, his family members continued to occupy the property.

Suspicious of his tenant's background, the homeowner made enquiries through an acquaintance in Delhi's bureaucratic circles. He was shocked to learn that no officer by the name of B Shashikanth held any such position in the capital's administration.

Connection to Earlier Arrest and Elaborate Setup

The landlord's investigation led him to the discovery that Shashikanth had already been arrested by the Film Nagar police in a previous case. The accused is alleged to have cheated multiple people by posing as either an Indian Police Service (IPS) or Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer.

During the initial arrest, police had seized a range of incriminating materials from Shashikanth, which he used to bolster his false identity. The recovered items included:

  • Various forged ID cards
  • A vehicle siren
  • Other paraphernalia used to project himself as a police officer involved in covert operations

To complete the facade of a high-profile officer, Shashikanth had even hired two private security guards to act as his armed escorts. These guards were equipped with walkie-talkies, adding a layer of authenticity to his charade.

New Case Registered and Ongoing Investigation

Based on the fresh complaint filed by the cheated homeowner, the Film Nagar police have registered another case against B Shashikanth. This new filing adds to the growing list of charges against the alleged conman, who is already in custody for similar offences.

The case highlights the audacious methods employed by fraudsters to exploit the trust and respect accorded to India's premier civil services. It also serves as a cautionary tale for individuals renting out properties to conduct thorough background checks, regardless of a prospective tenant's claimed credentials.
