Customs Seize High-Grade Marijuana at Indira Gandhi International Airport
Customs officials at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport have intercepted over 15 kilograms of suspected hydroponic weed, with an estimated illicit market value of approximately Rs 5.56 crore, from two Indian passengers returning from Bangkok. The seizure occurred during a routine X-ray screening of baggage on Tuesday, according to an official statement.
The contraband was discovered after X-ray images of the passengers' luggage raised suspicions. A detailed examination led to the recovery of nine polythene packets containing a green-colored narcotic substance, suspected to be hydroponic weed, a high-potency variety of cannabis. Seven packets were concealed inside a black trolley bag, while two were found in a brown backpack.
Details of the Seizure and Arrest
The total net weight of the recovered substance was 15.93 kilograms. Diagnostic testing conducted on the confiscated material prima facie confirmed it to be ganja or marijuana, the statement said. Customs officers seized the contraband along with the packing material under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Both passengers were placed under arrest for their involvement in the offense.
Hydroponic weed is a high-potency variety of cannabis cultivated in nutrient-rich water instead of soil, making it more potent and valuable in the illicit market. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is approximately Rs 5.56 crore, reflecting the high demand and profitability of such narcotics.
Enforcement and Legal Implications
The seizure underscores the ongoing efforts by Indian customs and law enforcement agencies to curb drug trafficking through international airports. The NDPS Act imposes stringent penalties for the possession, sale, and transportation of narcotic drugs, with provisions for rigorous imprisonment and fines. The arrested passengers face legal proceedings under this act, and further investigations are underway to trace the source and intended distribution network of the seized drugs.
This incident highlights the challenges faced by authorities in detecting concealed narcotics, especially with the use of advanced screening technologies. The successful interception at Delhi airport serves as a deterrent to smugglers attempting to exploit air travel routes for illegal drug trade.
