A surprise inspection at Jharsuguda District Jail on Thursday led to the seizure of prohibited items, including tobacco products and sharp objects, officials said. The inspection was conducted under the supervision of Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police G R Raghavendra to check security arrangements and curb the entry and circulation of banned items inside the jail.

Police and jail officials carried out searches of barracks, common areas, and belongings of inmates, recovering bidis, tobacco products, gutka sachets, matchboxes, razor blades, and a lighter.

“The inspection was aimed at assessing the overall security environment within the jail and identifying any potential security lapses,” Raghavendra said, adding that the team also reviewed CCTV surveillance, inmate management practices, visitor monitoring, and other security measures.

Officials said instructions were issued to jail authorities to strengthen security and ensure strict compliance with prison rules, and that such inspections would continue on a regular basis.
