Kandhamal Rape: 20-Year Sentence for Man Who Assaulted Teen

A fast track court in Phulbani, Kandhamal district, on Thursday sentenced a 28-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a 15-year-old girl that occurred two years ago. The verdict was delivered after the court examined 24 witnesses, including police officers and the medical officer, and considered medical reports and seized evidence.

Details of the Crime

According to sources, the accused, a resident of a neighboring village, allegedly took the victim to a kendu leaf godown, tied her hands, and raped her. He also threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident. Due to fear and social stigma, the victim's family initially did not approach the police. However, after the accused threatened her again, the survivor filed a First Information Report (FIR) on September 18, 2025.

Legal Proceedings

Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. The accused was arrested and has remained in judicial custody since then, as his bail applications were rejected by the court.
