Kanpur Court Sentences 3 for Dowry Death

Kanpur: Additional Sessions Judge Subhash Singh of Kanpur Nagar on Monday sentenced a husband and his parents for dowry death. The judge convicted Tirupati Mishra, a resident of Tiwaripur Jajmau, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 4,000. His mother Durgawati and father Sri Rang Mishra each received seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 4,000.

The court ordered that the time the convicts had already spent in jail during the trial would be counted towards their sentence.

According to Additional District Government Counsel Bhaskar Mishra, the victim's father, Rajendra Prasad Shukla, filed an FIR alleging that he had married his daughter Ranjana to Tirupati Mishra. When Ranjana returned to her father's house after about four months on February 7, 2019, she told him that her husband and in-laws tortured her and complained about insufficient dowry.

Rajendra Prasad consoled his daughter and assured her that everything would be resolved. He deposited Rs 40,000 in her name and sent her back to her in-laws' house on January 30, 2020.

On February 22, 2020, Rajendra Prasad received a message from the police station that Ranjana's body was in Kanshiram Hospital's mortuary. Shukla alleged that her husband and in-laws killed her and staged it as a suicide by hanging.
