Karnataka Youth Dies by Suicide After Losing Money in IPL Betting
A 28-year-old man, identified as Narayanaswamy, died by suicide in Tumakuru, Karnataka, after losing a significant amount of money in Indian Premier League (IPL) betting. According to police reports, Narayanaswamy, who was the sole breadwinner of his family, took the drastic step as he was unable to cope with the pressure from lenders demanding repayment.
The incident occurred late Wednesday evening, when Narayanaswamy was found hanging at his residence. Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the deceased had been involved in illegal betting activities during the ongoing IPL season and had incurred heavy losses.
Narayanaswamy's family members informed the police that he had been under severe stress for the past few days due to mounting debts. Despite repeated warnings from friends and relatives to stay away from betting, he continued to gamble in hopes of recovering his losses. The situation escalated when lenders began to threaten him, leading to his extreme step.
This tragic incident highlights the dangers of illegal betting and gambling, which often lead to financial ruin and mental health issues. Authorities have urged the public to refrain from such activities and seek help if they or someone they know is struggling with gambling addiction.
The police are also probing the network of bookies involved in the betting ring that lured Narayanaswamy and others. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty of facilitating illegal betting, they added.
