Custody Death in Koderma: Man Found Hanging After Domestic Violence Arrest
A tragic incident unfolded in Koderma district on Friday when a 40-year-old man, who had been taken into custody following a domestic violence complaint filed by his wife, was found dead inside the Jainagar police station. The deceased, identified as Vijay Kumar Yadav, was discovered hanging from the window bar of the room where he was lodged at approximately 10:30 AM.
Background of the Arrest
Vijay Kumar Yadav was arrested on Thursday after his wife, Chameli Devi, lodged a formal complaint accusing him of repeatedly torturing her under the influence of alcohol. The police had taken him into custody based on these allegations of domestic violence, which are serious offenses under Indian law.
Details of the Death
According to DSP Ratibhan Singh, who has been appointed to lead the investigation into the death, Yadav used a torn blanket to hang himself from the window bars. "The accused tore a blanket, wrapped it around his neck, and hung himself from the window bars of the room," DSP Singh stated. Upon discovery, Jainagar police rushed Yadav to Sadar Hospital, but doctors declared him brought dead upon arrival.
Allegations of Police Misconduct
In a dramatic turn of events, the wife of the deceased, Chameli Devi, submitted a petition to the Jainagar police station claiming that her husband was physically assaulted by policemen, which she alleges led to his untimely death. She specifically named Katiya picket in-charge Pramod Kumar Singh, constable Deepak, and driver Chandan Singh as responsible parties. These allegations have added a layer of complexity to the case, raising questions about police conduct and accountability.
Official Response and Investigation
Following the death, Koderma SP Anudeep Singh took immediate action by relieving the officer-in-charge of Jainagar police station, Umanath Singh, from his post and attaching him to the police lines for further inquiry. "DSP Singh has been appointed to lead investigation. The post-mortem will be conducted under the supervision of a magistrate and a team of medical professionals. Anyone found guilty of misconduct would face strict legal action," SP Singh emphasized.
Dr. Anil Kumar, the Koderma civil surgeon, noted that the exact cause of death will be determined after a thorough post-mortem examination. This medical procedure is crucial to ascertain whether the death was indeed a suicide or if there were other contributing factors, as alleged by the wife.
Broader Implications
This incident highlights several critical issues:
- The handling of domestic violence cases and the safety of accused individuals in police custody.
- The need for transparent investigations into custody deaths to maintain public trust in law enforcement.
- The importance of proper supervision and protocols in police stations to prevent such tragedies.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are under pressure to provide clarity and justice in this sensitive case, which has drawn attention to grassroots realities in Koderma district.
