Protesters Storm Kullu Hospital Over Post-Childbirth Death

Hundreds of residents in Kullu district staged a protest on Monday at the Regional Hospital, demanding a high-level investigation into the death of 23-year-old Manju Sharma, who died a day after giving birth on June 21. Led by social worker Bunty Seraji, the demonstrators forced their way past police barricades, burned an effigy of Health Minister Dhani Ram Shandil, and held a sit-in inside the hospital complex, alleging medical negligence.

Family Alleges Ignored Complaints

Manju Sharma, a resident of Bali Chowki in Mandi district, died on June 22, 2026. Her brother, Dinesh Sharma, stated that Manju had complained of discomfort throughout the day after delivery, but nursing staff dismissed her concerns, saying she was "creating drama" and that nothing was seriously wrong. The family lodged complaints with the police and district administration, and the State Women's Commission has taken cognisance of the matter.

Demand for Accountability

Bunty Seraji questioned the delay in action, stating, "Nine days have passed since the incident, and only a committee has been formed. If this had happened to a minister's daughter, would there have been a nine-day delay?" The protesters chanted slogans including "Manju Hum Sharminda Hain, Tere Katil Zinda Hain" (Manju, we are ashamed, your killers are alive). Seraji clarified that the protest was not against all doctors but sought action against those responsible for negligence.

Hospital Defends Inquiry Committee

The hospital's Medical Superintendent defended the formation of an inquiry committee, stating that protocol requires a panel of senior doctors available in the district. He acknowledged the committee was not entirely independent but said prescribed protocol was followed. He also apologised for an earlier incorrect statement that Manju had been taking medication for high blood pressure.

Family Vows to Seek Justice

Dinesh Sharma expressed frustration over the lack of transparency, saying, "Doctors are considered next only to God, but such negligence cannot be accepted." The family plans to approach the Chief Minister and, if necessary, move the court. The protest continued until demands for a high-level inquiry and strict action were met.
