L-G Sandhu Urges Humane, Tech-Driven Policing for Delhi

Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday urged the Delhi Police to strengthen visible, humane and technology-driven policing during the Commissionerate Day celebrations at the Parade Ground, New Police Lines. Speaking as the Chief Guest and Administrator of Delhi, Sandhu took the ceremonial salute alongside Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, senior serving officers and retired police personnel.

Call for Professional, Citizen-Centric Policing

Sandhu emphasised that policing must become more professional, sensitive and responsive while ensuring citizen-centric service delivery. He urged the force to align its practices with the national vision of Viksit Bharat. Highlighting community policing, he described it as a key pillar of public-police partnership and encouraged young officers to engage with citizens, understand their concerns and build public trust. On human resource management, Sandhu assured timely promotions and a transparent, predictable transfer policy for Delhi Police personnel.

Crime Statistics Show Significant Decline

Commissioner Satish Golcha stated that the Delhi Police had undergone significant transformation in recent years, with greater emphasis on crime prevention and technology-driven policing. Compared with 2025, heinous crimes have fallen by 8 per cent, while offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita declined by 12 per cent. Motor vehicle thefts dropped by 21 per cent and other thefts by 15 per cent—the lowest levels in the past 10 years. PCR calls related to robbery and snatching also declined due to improved police visibility and effective crime-control measures.

Women's Safety and High Detection Rates

The Commissioner said the safety of women, children and senior citizens remains the highest priority. Crimes against women have fallen by nearly 17 per cent, with a detection rate of 98 per cent—among the highest in the country. Nearly 95 per cent of such cases were charge-sheeted within the statutory period. This year, charge sheets were filed within two weeks in 35 POCSO cases and 172 street crime cases.

Honours for Bravery and Sacrifice

Sandhu presented the Ahat Veer Samman Patra to police personnel injured or killed in the line of duty. The 2026 award was conferred posthumously on Late Constable Vikram, who died on October 18, 2025, after being hit by a speeding truck while inspecting traffic obstacles at Shalimar Bagh Flyover. His wife, Anita Singh, received the honour. Other personnel honoured for injuries included Inspector Mahavir Prasad, SI Naresh Pal, ASI Sandeep, ASI Arun, W/HC Mamta, HC Jal Singh, Constable Rahul, Constable Manish, Constable Vikram and Constable Ravinder.

The L-G also presented the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) to 27 Delhi Police personnel whose awards were announced on Republic Day and Independence Day in 2025.
