Lohagad Fort Murder: Maharashtra Govt Orders SIT Probe

The Maharashtra government has ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the Lohagad Fort murder case, officials confirmed on Thursday. The decision comes amid growing public outcry over the brutal killing of a young woman at the historic fort near Pune.

Background of the Case

Investigations so far have revealed that the victim, identified as Siya, and the accused, Chetan, met in November last year. They later entered into a relationship even as marriage preparations were underway. The couple had reportedly visited Lohagad Fort on the day of the incident.

According to police sources, Chetan allegedly pushed Siya off a cliff during an argument, leading to her death. He was arrested shortly after the incident and has been remanded to police custody.

Government's Response

The state government, citing the complexity of the case and the need for a thorough investigation, announced the formation of an SIT. The team will comprise senior police officers from the Pune rural police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

“The SIT will probe all angles, including possible premeditation and any external influences,” said a senior official from the Home Department, speaking on condition of anonymity. The government has also assured the victim’s family of a fair investigation.

Public and Political Reactions

The case has sparked widespread protests, with women’s rights groups demanding stricter action against crimes targeting women. Opposition parties have criticized the government for initially handling the case through local police, calling for a faster and more transparent probe.

“We welcome the SIT order but demand a time-bound investigation and regular updates to the public,” said a spokesperson for a local women’s organization.

Next Steps

The SIT is expected to submit its first progress report within two weeks. Meanwhile, forensic teams are analyzing evidence collected from the crime scene, including mobile phone data and CCTV footage from nearby areas.

The Lohagad Fort murder case has once again highlighted safety concerns at tourist spots in the state, with demands for increased security measures and stricter background checks for guides and vendors operating at such locations.
