Madurai district police are investigating a disturbing case in Melur where an 80-year-old woman's body was concealed in a drum for weeks before being buried improperly. The deceased, Veerammal, a resident of Mangalampatti, passed away on April 23 after being bedridden for five months. She was under the care of her granddaughter, Amsavalli.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, after Veerammal's death, Amsavalli did not perform the last rites. Instead, she placed the body inside a plastic drum and left it in the house while she went to her native place. When a foul smell began emanating from the drum, Amsavalli decided to bury the body. On Wednesday, with the help of her brother-in-law, she buried the decomposed remains behind her house.
Police Intervention
Neighbors complained about the foul odor coming from the house, prompting Kottampatti police to visit the scene. They recovered the body and registered a case based on a complaint from the village administrative officer, who sought action for improper handling and burial of the deceased. A senior police official stated that Amsavalli claimed she placed the body in the drum because she did not know what else to do.
Mental Health Assessment Ordered
The police have requested doctors to conduct a mental health assessment of Amsavalli to determine if she is suffering from any psychological condition. The investigation is ongoing.
