Thodupuzha Court Imposes 10-Year Sentence for Minor Rape Case
In a significant ruling, the Thodupuzha first additional sessions court has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a minor girl that occurred in 2021. The court, presided over by Judge Ash K Bal, also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convicted individual, Anas (31), from Kodayathur. The judgment specifies that failure to pay the fine will result in an additional year of imprisonment, underscoring the severity of the crime.
Details of the Case and Legal Proceedings
The incident took place on April 21, 2021, when Anas, an employee at a commercial establishment, allegedly assaulted a minor girl who worked there for daily wages. The Thodupuzha police registered the case, with inspectors V C Vishnukumar, Shivakumar, and Sumesh Sudhakaran leading the investigation and filing the chargesheet. During the trial, the prosecution presented a robust case, calling 26 witnesses and submitting 41 documents to secure the conviction. Special prosecutor Pious Mathew represented the state in this high-profile case.
Compensation and Sentencing Adjustments
In addition to the prison term and fine, the court has ordered that Rs 3 lakh be provided to the victim under the state victim compensation scheme. The district legal services authority has been instructed to ensure appropriate compensation based on the girl's social and economic condition, aiming to support her recovery and well-being. Furthermore, the 93 days that the accused spent in custody prior to the judgment will be deducted from the total sentence, as per legal provisions.
