A video showing a young man travelling on the roof of a speeding cab on the Delhi–Jaipur National Highway in Gurugram has gone viral on social media, prompting police to register a First Information Report (FIR) at the Sadar police station. The incident, which occurred on the main carriageway of NH-48 under the jurisdiction of the Sadar police station, highlights the continued disregard for traffic safety despite repeated enforcement drives.
Details of the Incident
In the viral video, the young man is seen sitting precariously on top of heavy luggage loaded onto the cab's roof. The cab itself had no roof carrier, yet it was carrying a significant amount of baggage. The man struggled to maintain his balance as the vehicle moved at high speed. The video was recorded by the driver of a car approaching from behind, who captured the dangerous act on a mobile phone. The footage clearly shows the cab speeding along the highway with the man perched on the roof without any safety gear or support.
Social Media Reaction and Police Action
The video has been widely shared across social media platforms, drawing sharp criticism from users. Many commented that people are willing to risk their lives for the sake of saving a small amount of money or gaining a few likes and views on social media. Several users tagged the Gurugram traffic police and demanded strict legal action against both the cab driver and the young man involved. Acting on these complaints, the police registered an FIR at the Sadar police station.
“The accused has been identified during the investigation and a notice is being issued. The accused will be arrested as per procedure, and further legal action will be taken,” said a spokesperson for the Gurugram police.
Broader Context and Enforcement Challenges
This incident is the latest in a series of traffic violations in Gurugram where individuals perform life-threatening stunts to create content for social media reels. Despite ongoing enforcement drives by the traffic police, such dangerous acts continue unabated. The police have urged the public to refrain from such behaviour and to report any similar incidents immediately.
