In a major pre-emptive strike against narcotics, the Mangaluru City Police launched a targeted enforcement drive to ensure safe and drug-free festive celebrations for its citizens. The operation, based on specific intelligence, aimed to identify and deter drug consumption within the community.
Widespread Screening Nets Dozens of Consumers
City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy stated that police teams from all stations conducted screenings of approximately 1,000 individuals who were under suspicion based on credible tips and observable behaviour. From this large-scale exercise, 52 people tested positive for having consumed drugs.
This data proved crucial for the police to analyse consumption patterns and bolster their future preventive strategies. A breakdown of those caught revealed a concerning trend: 25 were students, with 23 hailing from outside the district. The remaining 27 were non-students, a group that included 17 labourers and 10 individuals from various other professions.
The authorities are handling these cases with a balanced approach, pursuing both counselling measures and appropriate legal action as mandated by law.
Supply Chain Hit: Three Notorious Peddlers Arrested
In a parallel success, the police managed to apprehend three drug peddlers in two separate cases, dealing a direct blow to the supply network. On December 30, one accused was caught possessing over 50 grams of MDMA. In another incident, two accused were found with a substantial 200 grams of MDMA.
Commissioner Reddy highlighted that all three arrested individuals have criminal backgrounds and were already under close police surveillance. Their capture marks a significant step forward in the police's mission to dismantle local drug supply chains.
Commitment to a Safe and Drug-Free Mangaluru
Reflecting on the operation's outcomes, Commissioner Reddy emphasized that the large-scale drive provided invaluable insights into the profile of drug consumers. This intelligence will enable the police to refine their strategies further.
"Mangaluru City Police remain fully committed to safeguarding youth, protecting communities, and ensuring that celebrations in the city remain joyful, safe, and drug-free," Reddy asserted.
He also acknowledged the vital role of the public, adding, "With the strong support of a highly responsible civil society and various organisations in Mangaluru, we are confident that together we can effectively combat the drug menace and keep our city safe and clean."
