In a startling revelation that underscores the scale of weapon proliferation in the troubled state, Manipur Police have recovered a massive cache of over 3,000 illegal firearms during an intensive year-long security operation.
According to Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, the recovery includes more than 3,000 firearms of various types alongside a staggering 1 lakh rounds of live ammunition and 5,000 assorted explosives. The seizures occurred between May 3, 2023, and May 2, 2024, a period marked by intense ethnic conflict in the northeastern state.
Unprecedented Security Operation
The recovery figures represent one of the largest weapons hauls in recent Indian history, highlighting the serious challenges faced by security forces in the region. "The recoveries were made during search operations and area domination exercises by security forces," stated DGP Singh, emphasizing the coordinated efforts between state and central security agencies.
Breakdown of Seized Arsenal
- Firearms: 3,000+ weapons including sophisticated rifles and handguns
- Ammunition: 1,00,000+ live rounds of various calibers
- Explosives: 5,000+ devices including grenades and bombs
Context of Ethnic Violence
The massive recovery operation comes against the backdrop of ongoing ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities that has claimed over 200 lives and displaced nearly 50,000 people. The proliferation of illegal weapons has been a major concern for authorities attempting to restore normalcy in the state.
"The recovery of such a huge quantity of illegal arms and ammunition indicates the severity of the security situation and the determined efforts by security forces to restore peace," the DGP noted during his announcement.
Ongoing Security Measures
Security forces continue to maintain a strong presence across Manipur, with regular combing operations and checkpoints aimed at preventing further arms smuggling and reducing violence. The recovery of these weapons is expected to significantly impact the capability of armed groups operating in the region.
The police department has urged citizens to cooperate with security forces and report any suspicious activities or hidden weapons, emphasizing that public participation is crucial for lasting peace in the troubled state.
