Mass Poisoning Plot Foiled at Mumbai Muharram Event

Mumbai police prevented a major tragedy early Monday after intercepting a man distributing capsules containing zinc phosphide, a potent rodenticide, during a Muharram procession in the Byculla area. The suspect, identified as a paint businessman, had allegedly planned to cause mass harm by distributing the capsules as painkillers. Authorities seized 14,900 capsules and arrested the individual, who confessed to the conspiracy.

Incident Unfolds During Early Morning Procession

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jayant Meena of Central Zone-I, the incident occurred around 4 am when a participant named Salman fell ill with vomiting and stomach pain after consuming one of the capsules. Subsequently, the police traced and arrested the suspect. He confessed that it was a conspiracy to target the procession and cause mass harm.”

Massive Stockpile of Poison and Capsules

The accused had procured 50 kg of zinc phosphide and 30,000 empty capsules, filling them over the past 15 days while staying in Mumbai. Police have so far recovered 14,900 capsules, with investigations ongoing to locate the remaining pills and chemicals. DCP Meena added, “A major tragedy and possible mass casualty was averted. So far, 14,900 capsules have been seized, with the remaining capsules and chemicals still under investigation.”
