Tension gripped Mohanpur village in Bihar's Gopalganj district on Saturday after the body of a 20-year-old man was discovered in a field, leading to allegations of murder and subsequent mob violence targeting a suspect in police custody.
Body Discovered, Family Alleges Murder
The deceased has been identified as Anil Kushwaha, son of Congress Kushwaha and a resident of Mohanpur village. His body was found lying in a wheat field located some distance away from the village. The discovery was made by local residents, after which a large crowd gathered at the site.
The family of the young man has leveled serious allegations, claiming he was murdered by members of a woman's family with whom he was allegedly having an affair. "The family of the deceased alleged that the woman called Anil and her family strangled him to death and then threw the body in the field," stated Kateya Station House Officer (SHO) Omprakash Chauhan.
Police Action and Mob Fury
Acting on the complaint filed by Anil Kushwaha's family, the police from Kateya police station took one suspect from the woman's family into custody for questioning. However, the situation took a violent turn when a mob attempted to snatch the suspect from police custody and physically assaulted him.
To prevent further escalation and protect the suspect, police officers made a tactical move. "To prevent further violence, police temporarily kept the suspect in a nearby house, which was soon surrounded by the crowd from all sides," explained SHO Chauhan. The police later managed to calm the agitated crowd through persuasion. "The situation was controlled by persuading the crowd. The suspect was later safely taken to the police station, where he is being interrogated," the SHO added.
Investigation Underway, Awaiting Post-Mortem
The forensic process has been initiated in the case. A team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) inspected the crime scene. The body has been sent to Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
"There were no signs of external injuries on the body. The exact cause of death will be clear only after the post-mortem report comes," said SHO Omprakash Chauhan. He confirmed that the allegations made by the deceased's family are being thoroughly examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
The incident has left the village of Mohanpur under the Kateya police station jurisdiction in a state of shock, with authorities working to maintain law and order while piecing together the events that led to the tragic death.
