In a startling turn of events, police in Ghazipur district have arrested a woman for allegedly fabricating a dowry murder case against her daughter's in-laws. The arrest came after a meticulous investigation revealed that the daughter, who was reported murdered, was actually alive and residing in a different city.
The Initial Complaint and FIR
The case began on October 3, 2025, when Rajwanti Devi, a resident of Barahpar Bhojurai village under the Sadat police station, filed a serious complaint. She alleged that her daughter, Ruchi (name changed), approximately 25 years old, was a victim of relentless dowry harassment and torture by her in-laws. Rajwanti Devi further claimed that the in-laws had eventually murdered Ruchi and disposed of her body.
Taking the allegations seriously, the Sadat police promptly registered a First Information Report (FIR). The case was filed under multiple stringent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act. These included sections 191(2) for rioting, 85 for physical/mental abuse and dowry harassment, 80(2) for dowry death, 238 for causing disappearance of evidence, and 352 for intentional insult, alongside relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
Investigation Uncovers the Truth
However, as the investigation led by Circle Officer (CO) of Saidpur, Ramkrishna Tiwari, progressed, the narrative began to unravel. Through electronic surveillance and examination of official records, police gathered evidence suggesting Ruchi was not dead. Contrary to the mother's claims, the evidence pointed to Ruchi being alive and currently staying in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.
Acting on this crucial lead, a police team was formed and dispatched to Gwalior to locate Ruchi and bring her back. In a coincidental development, call tracking and surveillance indicated that Ruchi was herself traveling from Gwalior towards the Sadat area. The police strategically intercepted her near the Baraheta bridge as she entered the region.
Arrest and Ongoing Probe
Ruchi's appearance and statements to the police confirmed that she was alive and well, completely negating the murder allegations made by her mother. Following this confirmation and the collection of substantial evidence against the complainant, the police took Rajwanti Devi into custody on Saturday.
CO Ramkrishna Tiwari stated that the arrest was made when the woman came to visit her mother after the daughter was located. He emphasized that further investigation into the motives behind filing the false case is continuing. The authorities are now delving deeper to understand the circumstances that led to the filing of such a serious, yet fabricated, complaint.
This case highlights the serious consequences of misusing legal provisions meant to protect victims. It also underscores the importance of thorough police investigation before drawing conclusions in sensitive matters like dowry harassment and death.
