Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Wednesday visited the families of the victims of the cruise boat tragedy that occurred in the Narmada river near Khandwa. Expressing deep condolences, he assured them that the guilty would not be spared and announced a high-level investigation into the incident.
CM's Assurance to Bereaved Families
During his visit to the affected families, Yadav said, "The state government stands with the families in this hour of grief. A thorough probe will be conducted to fix responsibility, and strict action will be taken against those found guilty." He also announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
Details of the Tragedy
The accident took place on Sunday when a cruise boat carrying around 40 passengers capsized in the Narmada river. So far, 16 bodies have been recovered, while several others are still missing. Rescue operations are underway with the help of NDRF and SDRF teams.
High-Level Probe Ordered
The CM ordered a high-level probe headed by a senior IAS officer to investigate the cause of the accident. The probe will submit its report within a month. "We will ensure that such incidents do not recur. Safety measures will be reviewed and strengthened," Yadav added.
Political Reactions
The tragedy has sparked political reactions, with opposition parties demanding a judicial inquiry. Congress leaders have alleged negligence by the state government in ensuring safety protocols for boat operations. The CM, however, dismissed the allegations and said the focus is on relief and rescue.
Rescue Operations Continue
Meanwhile, rescue teams are continuing their search for the missing persons. Divers have been deployed, and boats are scanning the river. The district administration has set up control rooms to coordinate the efforts. The death toll is expected to rise as search operations progress.
