A machete-wielding man who was allegedly threatening pedestrians on a busy road near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai was swiftly overpowered and disarmed by a police constable on Saturday evening, an official said on Sunday.
Incident Details
The incident occurred around 6:30 PM when the armed man began shouting and charging at crowds, as well as a woman accompanying him, according to police. Constable Vishal Yashwant Gade, attached to the LA-2 unit at Tardeo and currently on deputation at the police commissioner's office, was on his way to work when he spotted the commotion.
Acting swiftly, Gade approached the suspect from behind and overpowered him. With the help of a passer-by, he wrested the machete from the man's hand, the official said. The suspect, along with the seized weapon, was handed over to personnel of the M.R.A. Marg police station and a mobile patrol squad present at the scene.
Rescue and Impact
The woman was rescued safely, and the alert police constable averted a major tragedy, the official added. No injuries were reported. The suspect's identity and motive are under investigation.
Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar commended Constable Gade for his bravery and quick thinking. "His actions exemplify the dedication of Mumbai Police to ensuring public safety," Phansalkar said in a statement.
Context and Response
The incident took place near one of Mumbai's busiest railway stations, which sees heavy foot traffic daily. Local residents praised the police response. "We are grateful for the constable's courage. It could have been a disaster," said shopkeeper Rajesh Kumar, an eyewitness.
