Nagpur Man Arrested for Allegedly Stabbing 8-Year-Old Daughter to Death
A 46-year-old man was arrested in Nagpur on Wednesday. Police said he allegedly stabbed his eight-year-old daughter to death while she slept beside him. The attack reportedly followed a prolonged custody battle with his estranged wife.
Early Morning Tragedy in Sarode Nagar
The incident occurred around 5.45 am in Sarode Nagar. The accused, identified as Shekhar Shendre, allegedly used a kitchen knife to stab his daughter, Dhanashree, in the chest. She was sleeping at the time.
Early in the morning, the child's cries alerted her 71-year-old grandmother, Kusumbai, and her uncle. They rushed to the room and found Dhanashree seriously injured. Kusumbai immediately took her to the nearby Wathoda police station.
From there, she was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital. Doctors at the hospital declared her dead upon arrival. Police have taken Shendre into custody and are investigating the case further.
Custody Battle and Marital Disputes
According to investigators, Shendre allegedly stated that he attacked Dhanashree because he did not want to hand over her custody to her mother. Police revealed that Shendre and his estranged wife, Shubhangi, had been living separately due to marital disputes.
The disputes were primarily linked to his alleged liquor addiction and abusive behaviour. The couple had been embroiled in a prolonged dispute over the custody of their daughter. His wife had been demanding that the child be handed over to her.
Dhanashree was residing with her father, grandmother, and uncle at a rented residence in Sarode Nagar. Shendre reportedly worked as a daily wage labourer.
Police Response and Legal Action
We ensured the child was shifted from the police station to the hospital within eight minutes, but her injuries proved fatal, said Wathoda police senior PI Harish Borade. Based on a complaint by Kusumbai, police registered a case against Shendre under Section 103(1) of the BNS.
Shendre was arrested promptly. Further investigation is currently underway to gather more details about the incident. The police are examining all aspects of the case, including the family's history and the custody battle.
