A 21-year-old newly-married woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Rangabak village in Hailakandi district on Friday, triggering allegations of dowry-related harassment and murder. Her husband, father-in-law, and mother-in-law have been arrested in connection with the case.
Victim identified as Susmita Das
The deceased, identified as Susmita Das, had married Amit Deb on March 2 this year. According to her family, she was subjected to repeated mental and physical harassment after marriage. Family members alleged that she was pressured to bring cash, a gold chain, and a mobile phone from her parental home. They claimed that she was often forced to converse with her family on speaker.
Mother's account
Susmita's mother said she had visited her daughter's in-laws' house last Sunday to bring her home. "Her mother-in-law told me she would be sent home on Wednesday, but she never came back," she added.
On Friday, the family received news of Susmita's death. Relatives who rushed to the house claimed they found her body lying on the floor of a room under suspicious circumstances. While the husband's family has termed the incident a case of suicide, the victim's relatives alleged murder.
Police investigation
Katlicherra OC Nirupam Nath said a case had been registered and the body has been sent for an autopsy. Further investigation is underway.
