The Patna High Court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by former Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) legislator Ritlal Yadav, who sought his transfer from Bhagalpur Central Prison to Beur Jail in Patna. The order was passed by a single bench comprising Justice Alok Kumar Pandey, who rejected the criminal writ petition submitted by Yadav.
Case Background
The former RJD lawmaker was booked in a case involving allegations of public land grabbing, extortion of builders, and money laundering. In connection with these charges, Yadav was initially lodged as an undertrial prisoner at Beur Jail in Patna, the state capital.
However, on April 30 of the previous year, the state government ordered his transfer from Beur Jail to Bhagalpur Central Prison. Subsequently, through another order dated October 30, 2025, the transfer was extended for an additional six months, resulting in his continued detention at Bhagalpur prison until April 30 of this year.
Legal Challenge
Yadav challenged the October 30 order, questioning the legal authority of the Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Prisons posted in the state's Home Department to issue such a directive. The high court, after hearing arguments, dismissed his plea, upholding the transfer order.
Standing counsel Kinkar Kumar represented the state government during the proceedings.
