In a significant crackdown on organised crime, the Kankarbagh police station in Patna has successfully dismantled a sophisticated vehicle-lifting gang that had been operating across the city for several years. The police operation led to the arrest of eight members of the gang, including its alleged mastermind.
Gang's Modus Operani and Targets
The criminal syndicate, which police investigations reveal was operational since 2018, specialised in stealing two and three-wheelers. They primarily targeted autos, e-rickshaws, and bikes during the late-night and early morning hours when the streets were largely deserted. After stealing the vehicles, the gang would cleverly hide them in various apartments across the city to avoid immediate detection.
Their business model involved selling the stolen vehicles at heavily discounted prices in the Patna City area, finding ready buyers for cheap transportation. This cycle of theft and resale continued until the police, acting on specific intelligence, launched a coordinated raid.
Arrests and Criminal Histories Uncovered
The police have confirmed that six of the eight arrested accused have prior criminal records, indicating their long-standing involvement in illegal activities. The alleged kingpin of the operation has been identified as Govind. Investigations have uncovered that Govind is a seasoned criminal who has already served three separate jail terms for previous offences, yet returned to crime upon release.
Recoveries and Ongoing Manhunt
Following the arrests, the police conducted searches leading to the recovery of stolen property. From the gang's possession, law enforcement officials have recovered one stolen motorcycle and six auto-rickshaws so far. The value of the recovered vehicles is substantial, providing relief to several victims.
The operation, however, is not yet complete. Police authorities have stated that raids are currently underway to apprehend the remaining absconding members of the gang. They are leveraging information extracted from the arrested individuals to track down their accomplices and fully neutralize the network.
This bust highlights the persistent issue of vehicle theft in urban areas and showcases the Patna Police's focused efforts to tackle organised gangs. Citizens have been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to vehicle sales or storage.
