Punjab Leads Heroin Seizures in 2025

Punjab accounted for 58% of the total heroin seized in India during 2025, according to data released by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). The state's dominance in narcotics interception highlights the persistent drug trafficking challenge, with a notable shift toward drone-based smuggling along the border.

Shift to Drone-Based Smuggling

The NCB reported that smugglers are increasingly using drones to transport heroin across the India-Pakistan border into Punjab. This method allows for precise delivery and reduces the risk of interception compared to traditional ground-based routes. The bureau noted a significant rise in drone-related seizures in 2025.

Details of Seizures

According to NCB officials, total heroin seizures in India in 2025 amounted to over 3,500 kg, with Punjab contributing approximately 2,030 kg. Other states like Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Gujarat also reported seizures but at lower volumes. The NCB attributed the high seizure rate in Punjab to intensified surveillance and coordinated operations with state police and border security forces.

Impact and Response

The shift to drone smuggling poses new challenges for enforcement agencies. NCB Director General said, "The use of drones is a growing concern. We are working with the Indian Air Force and other agencies to develop counter-drone technologies." The bureau has also enhanced intelligence sharing and community outreach programs to curb drug demand in Punjab.

In response, the Punjab Police have ramped up patrolling and set up special checkpoints in border districts. The state government has also launched awareness campaigns targeting youth, who are often the primary consumers.
