In a significant blow to narcotics trafficking in the region, the Ludhiana police have successfully dismantled a sophisticated network that was smuggling high-grade heroin from border areas to the suburbs of Chandigarh. The breakthrough came after a high-stakes interception on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh highway.
Highway Interception Leads to Major Haul
The operation, which resulted in the seizure of more than four kilograms of heroin, led to the arrest of five men identified as primary suppliers for a "drug corridor" spanning northern Punjab. Acting on precise intelligence, the Khanna police set up a tactical checkpoint near Chowki Heddo on January 6. Their target was a black sedan allegedly carrying a large consignment from Ferozepur.
Khanna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jyoti Yadav confirmed the details, stating that the raid was led by CIA officer in charge Narpinderpal Singh. "We received secret information that a major shipment was moving toward Chandigarh," Yadav said. "Our teams successfully intercepted the vehicle and recovered 4.02 kg of heroin."
Domino Effect Unravels Distribution Web
The arrest of the vehicle's occupants, Jashanpreet Singh (24) and Angrej Singh (24), triggered a domino effect. During interrogation, they revealed a larger distribution network, confessing their role as regional suppliers. The duo admitted to supplying bulk quantities of heroin to Harshdeep Singh (22) and Prabhjot Singh (19) for local distribution.
The gang's operations covered a significant area, including Ludhiana, Mohali, Kharar, Samrala, and Khanna. A fifth suspect, Gurtej Singh, who was residing in Mohali, was later connected to the syndicate and taken into custody.
Criminal Backgrounds of the Accused
The investigation uncovered that several of the accused are repeat offenders with diverse criminal records:
- Jashanpreet Singh currently faces separate charges in Haryana related to immigration fraud.
- Gurtej Singh was previously booked under the Arms Act in Kharar in 2024.
A police spokesperson stated, "Further in-depth interrogation is ongoing. We expect more significant disclosures regarding the source of these drugs in the coming days."
Wider Crackdown on Street-Level Dealing
In a separate but concurrent offensive, the Khanna police reported the arrest of five additional suspects across four different cases. These operations led to the seizure of a further 180 grams of heroin, signalling an intensified crackdown on local street-level drug dealing in the region.
