Panic spread through the Lokon Tank area in Dhanbad on Monday morning after the shocking discovery of a man's body in the local Pampu Talab. The incident caused significant unrest among residents, drawing a large and anxious crowd to the waterside.
Body Recovery and Identification
The deceased was later identified as Birbal, a railway employee. According to information, Birbal had been missing since Sunday night. His family, growing concerned when he did not return home, filed a formal missing person's complaint at the Dhanbad police station on Monday morning.
As police began their search, they received urgent information about a body seen floating in Pampu Talab. Officers rushed to the scene and, with assistance from local residents, retrieved the body from the pond. Family members were summoned for identification and confirmed the tragic news.
Circumstances Leading to the Tragedy
Preliminary investigations and accounts from locals suggest a sequence of unfortunate events. Birbal was known to consume alcohol. On Sunday night, he was reportedly heavily intoxicated. It is believed he went towards the pond to answer nature's call.
ASI Sudhir Singh of Dhanbad police station stated that, prima facie, it appears Birbal accidentally slipped and fell into the deep water while near the pond. Due to his excessive intoxication, he likely lost his balance and was unable to save himself, leading to drowning.
Police Investigation and Community Reaction
The police have sent the body for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death. "The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report is received," said ASI Singh, adding that a thorough investigation is ongoing under relevant legal sections.
The sudden death has plunged Birbal's family into profound grief. Meanwhile, the incident has sparked concern among area residents, who are now calling for improved safety measures around open water bodies to prevent similar tragic accidents in the future.
