Railway Overbridge Collapses in Chandauli District, Injuring Two Laborers
A section of an under-construction railway overbridge (ROB) on the vital Howrah-Gaya rail route collapsed on Wednesday night, causing injuries to two laborers and sparking local outrage. The incident occurred near Banauli Khurd village in Chandauli district, Uttar Pradesh, during the critical phase of slab casting between two pillars.
Immediate Response and Official Inspection
Chandauli District Magistrate Chandra Mohan Garg and Superintendent of Police Aditya Langhe swiftly visited the site on Thursday to assess the damage. Following a thorough inspection, DM Garg confirmed that the two injured laborers are currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital. "Their condition is being monitored closely," he stated.
In response to the collapse, authorities have established a committee to investigate the root cause. "A committee has been formed to ascertain what caused the collapse, and based on the investigation report, the future course of action will be decided," announced DM Garg. This move aims to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents.
Construction Details and Local Panic
The ROB is being constructed by the UP Bridge Corporation in Banauli Khurd village, under the Sadar tehsil area. Witnesses reported that the entire slab crumbled and fell to the ground, creating a scene of chaos and panic. Hundreds of villagers rushed to the spot, expressing concerns over safety and construction quality.
Local residents have raised serious allegations of large-scale irregularities in the construction process. They questioned the absence of engineers or senior officials from the agency or relevant government departments to monitor the work. "Why was no one present to oversee such a critical project?" demanded one villager, highlighting the need for stricter supervision.
Community Demands and Quality Concerns
The collapse has intensified calls for a proper check of the construction materials being used. Villagers are urging authorities to conduct thorough inspections to ensure that substandard materials are not compromising structural integrity. "We demand transparency and accountability in this project," emphasized a community representative, reflecting widespread frustration.
This incident underscores the importance of rigorous safety protocols in infrastructure projects, especially in densely populated areas. As the investigation unfolds, stakeholders await findings that could lead to improved construction practices and enhanced oversight mechanisms.
