In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Ranchi successfully apprehended a police sub-inspector on Friday for demanding and accepting a bribe. The officer was caught in the act while taking illegal gratification from a truck owner.
Sub-Inspector's Repeated Demands for Bribe
The accused has been identified as Shyam Nandan Paswan, who was posted at the Bedo police station. According to the ACB's case, Paswan had been repeatedly summoning the owner of a 14-wheeler TATA truck to the police station. His demand was clear: a payment of Rs 50,000 in exchange for sending a necessary report to the motor vehicle inspector for the truck's mechanical check-up.
Frustrated by the persistent and illegal demand, the truck owner decided not to comply. Instead of paying the bribe, he took a stand against corruption by approaching the Anti-Corruption Bureau in Ranchi and filing a formal complaint.
ACB's Trap and the Red-Handed Arrest
Upon receiving the complaint, the ACB team initiated a preliminary investigation. The allegations were found to have merit, prompting the agency to set a legal trap to catch the officer in the act.
The plan was executed meticulously. On Friday, as Sub-Inspector Shyam Nandan Paswan accepted a partial bribe amount of Rs 10,000 from the complainant, ACB officials swooped in and caught him red-handed. The arrest was made on the spot, providing concrete evidence for the case.
A Stand Against Corruption in Jharkhand
This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by the Anti-Corruption Bureau to tackle graft within the system, particularly involving public servants who misuse their authority. The truck owner's decision to report the crime, rather than silently pay the bribe, was crucial in enabling this action.
The case serves as a stern warning to officials engaged in corrupt practices and reinforces the message that citizens can actively help in the fight against corruption by reporting such incidents to the authorities.
