A retired Calcutta High Court judge, who serves on the State Information Commission tribunal, has reportedly received death threats demanding the inclusion of specific Muslim names in the final voter roll. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of judicial officials in the run-up to elections.
Threatening Letter Delivered to Home
The judge's daughter lodged a formal complaint with the police on May 2, stating that a letter was delivered to their residence in the Picnic Garden area of Kolkata on Saturday. The letter threatened the judge and his family with dire consequences if all Muslim names currently marked as 'under-review' were not included in the final electoral list.
Details of the Threat
According to the complaint, the anonymous letter demanded that the tribunal ensure the inclusion of all pending Muslim names, failing which the judge would face severe repercussions. The family, fearing for their safety, immediately approached the local police station to register the complaint.
The retired judge has been serving on the State Information Commission tribunal, which handles matters related to voter list revisions and disputes. The threat is believed to be linked to ongoing scrutiny of names in the electoral roll ahead of the upcoming elections.
Police Investigation Underway
Kolkata Police have launched an investigation into the matter. Officials have collected the letter for forensic analysis and are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the sender. Security has been heightened around the judge's residence, and additional protection has been provided to the family.
This incident highlights the growing tension surrounding voter list revisions in West Bengal, where political parties have frequently accused each other of manipulating electoral rolls. The Election Commission has urged all stakeholders to maintain peace and follow legal procedures.
