Sangrur Police Crack Chilling Double Murder Case, Arrest Accused for Family Killings

The Sangrur district police have successfully solved a harrowing double murder case that occurred on January 17, 2026, arresting Gurpreet Singh for the alleged killings of his mother and sister. The investigation uncovered a meticulously staged crime scene designed to mimic a fatal car accident.

Details of the Tragic Incident

According to police reports, Sarabjit Kaur, a 35-year-old resident of Mouran village who served in the Punjab Police CID Unit at Dirba, left her home in the morning with her 55-year-old mother, Inderjit Kaur. They were traveling in Sarabjit's car with registration number PB13 BS 1294, intending to drop Inderjit at a relative's place in Bhai Ki Pishour village before Sarabjit proceeded to her office.

Tragically, the journey took a horrific turn. On the route from Sular Gharat towards village Chhahar, the vehicle was reported to have met with an accident, caught fire, and resulted in the deaths of both occupants. Their skeletons were discovered inside the charred car, leading to initial assumptions of a tragic mishap.

Police Investigation and Breakthrough

A case was initially registered against unknown persons under sections 281, 106, and 324(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Dirba police station. Under the guidance of Davinder Atri, Superintendent of Police (Investigation) for Sangrur, and the supervision of Dr. Rupinder Kaur, DSP Sub-Division Dirba, special investigative teams were formed.

These teams, comprising Inspector Sandeep Singh, Incharge of CIA Sangrur, and Inspector Kamaljit Singh, SHO of Dirba police station, worked diligently to uncover the truth. Their efforts culminated in a breakthrough on January 23, 2026, with the arrest of Gurpreet Singh, the brother of Sarabjit Kaur.

Confession and Gruesome Details

During interrogation, Gurpreet Singh confessed to the heinous crime. He revealed that on the intervening night of January 16 and 17, 2026, he murdered his sister and mother. To conceal his actions and avoid suspicion, he placed their bodies in the car, crashed it into a tree, sprinkled petrol on the bodies and vehicle, set it ablaze, and fled the scene.

"The investigation is under process and more details are likely to be revealed. Our alert team has been able to crack the double murder case. The accused has also been arrested," stated SP Davinder Atri, highlighting the police's commitment to justice.

Legal Proceedings and Official Statements

Following the arrest, legal charges have been updated. The initial charges under sections 281 and 106 of the BNS have been dropped, and Section 103 of the BNS has been added, reflecting the gravity of the murder charges. The accused has been remanded into custody as the investigation continues.

Punjab's Finance and Planning Minister, Harpal Singh Cheema, commented on the case, emphasizing the thoroughness of the police investigation. He asserted that individuals committing such heinous crimes in the state will face severe consequences, with the Punjab government and police striving to ensure the criminal receives the death penalty.

This case underscores the dedication of law enforcement in solving complex crimes and delivering justice, even when perpetrators attempt to disguise their actions through elaborate staging.
