Sarpanch and Associates Arrested for Plotting Attack on Singer Gulab Sidhu

Police in Barnala have arrested three men, including a village sarpanch, for allegedly planning an armed attack on prominent Punjabi singer Gulab Sidhu. The arrests followed a social media feud over Sidhu's controversial song 'Sarpanchiyaan'.

Weapons Recovered During Police Operation

Barnala Senior Superintendent of Police Sarfaraz Alam confirmed the arrests of Baljinder Singh, the elected sarpanch of Kotduna village, along with his associates Gurwinder Singh and Balwinder Singh. During the operation, police recovered an illegal weapon and live ammunition.

Investigators allege the trio intended to use the firearm to target Gulab Sidhu during a scheduled appearance at a wedding function. The police crackdown prevented what could have been a violent confrontation.

Song Lyrics Trigger Violent Response

The investigation reveals that Baljinder Singh, also known as 'Kinda', took offense to Sidhu's recent song. He claimed the lyrics defamed the "sarpanch community" and uploaded a threatening video to social media. In the video, he warned Sidhu of "dire consequences" if the song was not removed.

Before the planned attack, the group reportedly intended to "teach the singer a lesson" through physical violence. Their plan later shifted to making long-term extortion demands against the popular artist.

Criminal History and Jail Connections Uncovered

All three suspects have previous criminal records. SSP Alam stated they were involved in three extortion cases across Barnala and Sangrur districts in 2022. They were released from prison in 2024, shortly before Baljinder Singh was elected as sarpanch.

The investigation uncovered a disturbing "jail-to-street" supply chain. While in custody, Baljinder Singh allegedly contacted Malkit Singh 'Keeta', an inmate at Kapurthala jail. Malkit Singh reportedly facilitated the procurement of two pistols for the planned hit.

One weapon was returned after malfunctioning, while police seized the second during the arrests. This connection highlights how criminal networks operate even from behind bars.

Police Action and Ongoing Investigation

Police have registered a first-information report under relevant sections of the law. SSP Alam emphasized that further investigation is progressing to uncover additional links, the complete weapon supply chain, and other associates involved in this criminal network.

The case demonstrates how artistic expression can trigger extreme reactions from those who feel targeted. It also shows the challenges law enforcement faces when dealing with individuals who combine political positions with criminal activities.

Local communities have expressed shock that an elected representative would allegedly participate in such violent plotting. The incident raises questions about the vetting process for village leadership positions.
