Cachar Police Seize Rs 2 Crore Heroin, Arrest 5 in Silchar Drug Bust
Silchar: Police seize heroin worth Rs 2 crore, arrest five

In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Cachar district police on Tuesday confiscated a large quantity of suspected heroin and apprehended five individuals in a well-coordinated operation on the outskirts of Silchar.

Major Haul on Silchar Outskirts

The operation unfolded on the Sonabarighat bypass, a key area on the city's periphery. Acting on a specific intelligence tip-off, a special police team intercepted two vehicles for a thorough inspection. A detailed search of one car led to a critical discovery: 40 soap cases containing a suspicious powder, cleverly concealed within a hidden compartment of the vehicle.

The seized substance, suspected to be heroin, weighed approximately 406 grams. Preliminary estimates by police officials place its street value at a staggering Rs 2 crore.

Five Arrested, Inter-State Link Suspected

The police team swiftly took five persons travelling in the vehicles into custody. The arrested individuals have been identified as:

  • Kamrul Islam (23), Halim Uddin (25), and Sarmina Parbin (22) from Nilambazar in Sribhumi district.
  • Monpui (50) from Zema Bawk in Aizawl, Mizoram.
  • Lalthanpui (41) from Champhai district in Mizoram.

Initial investigations by the police suggest a concerning inter-state and potentially cross-border drug trafficking route. The intercepted vehicles were reportedly travelling from Mizoram's Champhai district, indicating the operation of an organized network spanning state boundaries.

Intensified Surveillance and Ongoing Probe

All the accused have been formally arrested, and legal proceedings have been initiated against them under the relevant sections of the law. Senior police officers stated that this seizure is a direct result of intensified surveillance and enforcement actions being undertaken by the Cachar district police to curb the menace of narcotics in the Barak Valley region.

A further investigation is currently underway to uncover the full extent of the drug network. Authorities are working to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in this trafficking chain, aiming to dismantle the operation from its roots.
