Sonowal convoy accident injures 6, including 4 policemen

A major accident involving the convoy of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal left six people injured, including four police personnel, on a busy Assam bypass on Sunday afternoon. The chain collision occurred near Hatiali on the Dibrugarh-Tinsukia four-lane bypass, sending shockwaves through the area.

Sequence of the Collision

The incident took place at approximately 3:45 PM while Minister Sonowal was en route from Dibrugarh to his birthplace, Bindhakata in Chabua. According to initial police reports, the chain of events began when an escort vehicle from the minister's convoy rammed into a civilian car from behind.

Police officials stated that the collision happened after the civilian car suddenly swerved to the left, giving the escort vehicle driver little time to react. The impact caused substantial damage to both vehicles. In a subsequent moment of chaos, another police vehicle from the same convoy crashed into the already damaged escort vehicle, as its driver failed to brake in time.

Immediate Response and Medical Aid

Emergency protocols were swiftly activated following the crash. An ambulance that was part of the minister's convoy was immediately pressed into service to provide critical first response.

All the injured individuals were rushed to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh for urgent medical treatment. The injured comprised four policemen from the convoy and two civilians from the car that was initially hit.

Official Statement and Condition of Injured

Dibrugarh Senior Superintendent of Police, Abhijit Gurav, confirmed the details of the accident. He stated that the incident fell under the jurisdiction of the Chabua police station.

"This afternoon, one escort vehicle from the convoy of Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal hit a civilian vehicle near Hatiali, under Chabua police station. As a result, six persons, including four policemen, were injured. They were taken to AMCH in the convoy’s ambulance," SSP Gurav said.

Providing a crucial update, he confirmed that all six injured are out of danger and are currently undergoing the necessary treatment at AMCH. The news has brought a sense of relief to the local community following the alarming incident.

The accident has raised questions about road safety on the busy bypass, especially during high-profile movements. Investigations into the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the sudden swerving of the civilian car are likely underway as authorities piece together the final moments leading to the collision.
