A tragic incident of school violence has resulted in a 17-year-old student being declared brain dead in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district. The victim, a Class XII student, was brutally assaulted by a group of his juniors from the same school, leading to catastrophic injuries.
Chilling Details of the Assault
The victim has been identified as G Kaviarasan, a student of Arignar Anna Model Higher Secondary School located in Patteswaram near Kumbakonam. According to police reports, the attack was the culmination of a long-standing enmity between two student groups within the school.
Authorities revealed that the groups, primarily consisting of Class XI and Class XII students, had clashed several times on the school campus over the past three months. The school administration had previously intervened and mediated a peace agreement between the rival factions.
However, tensions erupted again on December 3. A fresh altercation broke out between the groups inside the school toilet during the lunch break. This seemingly minor clash set the stage for a far more violent confrontation the following day.
The Fatal Attack and Aftermath
On December 4, the situation escalated dramatically. More than 15 Class XI students allegedly lay in wait for Kaviarasan on Therodum Keezh Road. They ambushed him and launched a vicious attack using wooden sticks.
The assault was so severe that Kaviarasan suffered a critical skull fracture. He was immediately rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, his condition deteriorated, and he was declared brain dead on the morning of Saturday, December 6.
The teenager was later shifted to the Thanjavur Government Medical College Hospital, where he remains on life support systems.
Police Action and Community Response
Following a formal complaint lodged by Kaviarasan's grief-stricken parents, the Kumbakonam taluk police swiftly registered a case. Law enforcement officials have detained all 15 students allegedly involved in the fatal attack.
As the accused are minors, they have been lodged in a juvenile detention facility. The police have also increased their presence in the Patteswaram area to prevent any further untoward incidents, as community tension remains high in the wake of the tragedy.
The incident has drawn sharp reactions from political leaders and the public alike. PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss expressed deep concern over the rising instances of conflict and violence among students, calling for urgent measures to address the issue.
This heartbreaking case has thrown a harsh spotlight on the critical issues of student safety, conflict resolution mechanisms within educational institutions, and the growing problem of juvenile violence in schools.
