Mangaluru City police have taken three individuals into custody following a disturbing incident on Sunday. A migrant laborer from Jharkhand faced a brutal assault by four men who wrongly labeled him as a Bangladeshi national.
Police Action and Arrest Details
The arrested suspects are Rateesh Das, aged 32, Dhanush, 24, and Sagar, 24, all residents of Kulur. A dedicated police team made the arrests under the guidance of Mangaluru North sub-division ACP Shrikanth K. Kavoor police inspector Raghavendra Byndoor and PSI Mallikharjun Biradara led the operation.
Victim's Account of the Assault
The victim, Diljan Ansari, shared his harrowing experience. Ansari has been working in Mangaluru for about six months every year over the past fifteen years. He stated that the accused demanded he show identity documents during the incident. They also made unnecessary remarks towards him.
When Ansari insisted he was not from Bangladesh, the situation turned violent. The attackers used a trowel he was carrying to assault him, causing injuries.
Political Condemnation and Economic Concerns
B K Imtiyaz, the DYFI district president, strongly condemned the attack. He highlighted the crucial role of north Indian workers in the district's industrial and manufacturing sectors. Imtiyaz emphasized that many local industries and enterprises rely heavily on their labor.
"Without these workers, numerous businesses in the district would struggle to operate," Imtiyaz said. He warned that such assaults on migrant laborers could harm the local economy and disrupt social harmony.
Alarming Trend Against Migrant Workers
Muneer Katipalla, secretary of CPI(M) in DK, expressed deep concern over the harassment of migrant workers. He described it as an alarming development. Katipalla noted that there have been attempts to mobilize cadres for violence against these workers.
The goal, according to him, is to create fear and tarnish Mangaluru's image. He pointed out a stark irony in the situation.
Double-Faced Politics Exposed
Katipalla revealed that the very people attacking migrant workers often employ them in their own businesses. They offer low wages instead of hiring local labor. This hypocritical approach must be firmly rejected, he asserted.
The incident has sparked discussions about the safety and rights of migrant workers in Mangaluru. It underscores the need for greater protection and respect for those contributing to the local economy.
