New Delhi witnessed a tragic start to the new year with three separate road accidents claiming lives within the city. The victims include an elderly woman, a security guard, and a middle-aged man, highlighting persistent road safety concerns in the capital.
Elderly Woman Fatally Hit by Truck at Azadpur Chowk
The first incident occurred on Saturday near Azadpur Chowk. A 70-year-old woman, Gayatri Devi, a resident of Mukundpur, lost her life after being struck by a truck while crossing the road. The impact was severe, and she died on the spot. Police confirmed that the truck involved remained at the location.
The authorities swiftly arrested the accused driver, identified as Arjun Kumar (35), and seized the vehicle. Gayatri Devi, who worked as a labourer in a utensil factory located in the Wazirpur Industrial Area, was the victim of this fatal collision.
Security Guard Crushed by Reversing Car in Model Town
In a separate and equally distressing event on January 1, a 44-year-old security guard named Jaspaal Singh was killed in northwest Delhi's Model Town area. The incident happened when a car, reversing negligently, struck him. He was rushed to BJRM Hospital but was declared brought dead.
His brother, Nirmal Singh, provided a harrowing account, stating his younger brother was disabled and was on duty at a local institute when the car hit a railing and crushed him. "The driver reversed the car negligently, hit the railing and crushed my brother," he said. A case has been registered under sections 281 (rash driving) and 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Tragically, Jaspaal Singh was the sole breadwinner for his family of four. No arrests have been made in this case so far.
Motorcycle Accident on Helipad Road Claims Another Life
The third tragedy unfolded on December 31 of last year on Helipad Road in Begumpur. A 52-year-old man, Krishan, succumbed to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident while commuting to work.
His son, Chetan (22), recounted receiving a call around 4:10 pm informing him of his father's accident. He and his younger brother, Ishant, immediately rushed to the scene and later to the hospital where Krishan was initially treated. Despite being referred to another facility for advanced care, Krishan's injuries proved fatal, and he passed away on January 1.
These consecutive incidents underscore the critical and ongoing issue of road safety in Delhi. They have left three families devastated, raising urgent questions about driver accountability, pedestrian safety, and enforcement of traffic laws in the city.
