A special court in Tripura's Gomati district has sentenced a school teacher to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping and blackmailing a minor student. The conviction, announced on Friday, followed the court's evaluation of testimonies from seven witnesses presented by special Pocso public prosecutor Paltu Das.
Court Ruling
Judge Ravi Dahiya of the special judicial court found the teacher guilty under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, along with relevant provisions concerning repeated sexual assault.
Details of the Crime
The teacher, a resident of Gomati district, was employed at an aided higher secondary school. According to the prosecution, the minor girl began attending tuition classes at the teacher's home in 2019. Police investigation revealed that the teacher drugged the student's refreshments, sexually assaulted her, and recorded the act on his mobile phone to use as leverage for blackmail.
Evidence showed that the teacher repeatedly assaulted the minor in secluded areas, forced vermilion on her, and threatened to harm her family if she disclosed the abuse.
Victim's Courage
The girl broke her silence in 2021 and filed a written complaint at a police station. A sub-inspector spearheaded the investigation, resulting in the teacher's arrest and the filing of charges.
This case highlights the importance of strict enforcement of laws protecting children from sexual offences. The court's swift action sends a strong message that such crimes will not be tolerated.
