A serious allegation of police brutality has emerged in Vadodara, prompting the city's top cop to order an immediate investigation. The incident involves a 30-year-old man who claims he was severely beaten by officers inside the Sayajigunj traffic branch office.
Allegations of Severe Assault Emerge
The complainant, identified as Vijendra Singh, a resident of Bajwa Road, reached SSG Hospital (SSGH) with injuries, claiming he was assaulted at the police facility. According to his account, the ordeal began when he was stopped by traffic policemen at the Dandiabazaar Crossroads junction while on his way to work.
Singh, speaking to media from a hospital stretcher, stated his motorcycle was stopped for two primary violations: it lacked a registration plate and was fitted with a modified silencer. He also admitted to not wearing a helmet at the time. The situation escalated when an officer demanded his motorcycle key.
Sequence of Events as Alleged by Victim
"I refused to hand over the key, which led to a heated argument," Singh recounted. He alleges that he was then subjected to abuse and physical beating right near the crossroads. Subsequently, he was taken to the Sayajigunj traffic branch office in a patrol vehicle.
The most severe part of the assault, Singh claims, occurred inside the traffic branch office. He alleged that police officers beat him badly, with some even kicking him in his private parts. These grave accusations have now put the spotlight on the conduct of the personnel involved.
Police Commissioner Orders High-Level Probe
Vadodara Police Commissioner Narsimha Komar has taken cognizance of the matter. He confirmed that Singh and the policemen have traded allegations against each other. Komar verified the initial reason for the stop—the number plate and silencer violations.
To ensure a fair and transparent investigation, Commissioner Komar has sought a detailed report from a senior officer. He has specifically tasked the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) with probing the entire incident, including the counter-allegations from both sides.
The case highlights critical concerns about police conduct and the treatment of citizens during routine traffic checks. The outcome of the DCP's investigation is now awaited to establish the factual truth behind the disturbing claims made by Vijendra Singh.
