Woman arrested in Chennai for two thefts, gold recovered

Chennai police have successfully cracked two theft cases with the arrest of a 34-year-old woman, leading to the recovery of a significant quantity of gold jewellery. The Zambazaar police team apprehended the accused, identified as Aarnipalli Ravanamma, and seized a total of 19.5 sovereigns of gold from her possession.

The First Theft: A Sedative-Laced Sweet

The investigation began after a disturbing incident on January 7. According to police, Ravanamma, a resident of Triplicane originally from Andhra Pradesh, targeted a tailor in the same area. She allegedly fed the victim a sedative-laced sweet, causing the woman to lose consciousness. Ravanamma then fled with the tailor's six-sovereign gold thaali chain.

Acting on the victim's formal complaint, law enforcement officials registered a case and began their probe. A crucial breakthrough came after examining CCTV footage from the vicinity, which helped identify the suspect. Based on this evidence, the police arrested Ravanamma on Friday and recovered the stolen gold chain from her.

Uncovering a Second Crime

Further interrogation and investigation revealed that Ravanamma was involved in another theft prior to the January incident. Police discovered that on December 17, she had stolen gold jewellery from the house of a man named Maharajan, also located in Triplicane. In this case, she allegedly took approximately 20 sovereigns of gold jewellery that was kept in a cupboard.

Following her arrest for the first crime, police managed to recover 108 grams (equivalent to 13.5 sovereigns) of jewellery linked to this earlier December theft. The combined recovery from both cases amounted to the total of 19.5 sovereigns.

Background and Judicial Action

Police provided details about the accused's background. Ravanamma had been living in Chennai for the past decade after separating from her husband. To support herself, she worked as a daily wage labourer. The motive behind the thefts is under investigation.

Following the legal process, Ravanamma has been remanded to judicial custody. The Zambazaar police have successfully closed two significant theft cases, bringing a sense of relief to the affected victims in the Triplicane locality.
