Woman Arrested with 1.06 kg Charas on HRTC Bus
The Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA) of the Nurpur police district arrested a 19-year-old woman on Sunday for carrying 1.06 kg of charas while travelling on a Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus. The accused, identified as Gungun, daughter of Shashi Kumar, is a resident of Khildu village in Palampur subdivision of Kangra district.
She was travelling on the Harsipattan-Amritsar HRTC bus when the CIA team, acting on a tip-off, stopped the bus at Bodh near Nurpur. During a search of her bag, the contraband was recovered, leading to her immediate arrest.
Legal Action and Investigation
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dharam Chand Verma confirmed that an FIR has been registered under Sections 20 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The accused is scheduled to be produced in court on Monday for police remand.
ASP Verma stated, “Investigations are under way to trace the forward and backward links of the drug trafficking network and ascertain the involvement of other women.” The police are working to dismantle the broader network behind the seizure.
Rising Involvement of Women in Drug Trafficking
The Nurpur police district has arrested 13 women and 100 other individuals in drug trafficking-related cases over the past six months. This trend indicates an increasing involvement of women in the lucrative but risky drug peddling trade, according to police officials.
The arrest of Gungun highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to curb drug trafficking in the region, particularly along bus routes. The police continue to monitor and act on intelligence to prevent the flow of narcotics.
