Ballabhgarh-Palwal Metro DPR Nears Completion
The detailed project report (DPR) for the ambitious Ballabhgarh-to-Palwal Metro extension is entering its final stage, according to sources familiar with the development. The 28-kilometer corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time between these key Haryana towns and boost economic activity in the region.
The project, part of the broader NCR connectivity plan, will link Ballabhgarh in Faridabad district with Palwal, a rapidly growing industrial and agricultural hub. Once operational, the metro is projected to cut the current commute time of over an hour by road to less than 30 minutes.
Economic and Commuter Benefits
Officials estimate the metro line will carry over 200,000 passengers daily in its first year, easing congestion on the congested NH-19 and reducing vehicular emissions. The corridor is expected to spur real estate and commercial development along its route, particularly in Palwal, which has emerged as a key logistics and warehousing center.
“This metro extension will be a game-changer for Palwal and the surrounding areas. It will not only improve daily commutes but also attract investment and create jobs,” said a Haryana government official involved in the project, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Project Details and Timeline
The DPR, being prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), includes detailed surveys on land acquisition, station locations, and ridership projections. The proposed line is expected to have 10 stations, with interchanges at Ballabhgarh (connecting to the existing Violet Line) and possibly at Palwal railway station.
While no official deadline has been announced, sources indicate that construction could begin within 18 months of DPR approval, with a target completion of 4-5 years. The project cost is estimated at around Rs 4,000 crore, with funding expected from the Haryana government and central urban development schemes.
Regional Impact
The metro link is part of a larger push to improve public transport in Haryana's NCR districts. It follows the successful extension of the metro to Ballabhgarh in 2017, which transformed commuting patterns in Faridabad. Palwal, with its growing population of over 500,000 and proximity to the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, stands to benefit similarly.
Local businesses and residents have welcomed the development. “We have been waiting for this for years. It will make travel to Delhi and Gurugram much easier,” said Ramesh Kumar, a shopkeeper in Palwal. The project also aligns with the central government's focus on expanding metro networks in tier-2 cities.
