7 Dead in Ammonia Gas Leak at Seafood Plant in TN

Seven workers were killed and over 50 others affected after an ammonia gas leak occurred at a seafood processing unit in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu, on Sunday, June 21, 2026. The incident took place at the premises of a private seafood export company located in the SIPCOT industrial complex in Mappillaiyurani village, around 15 km from Thoothukudi city.

Details of the Incident

According to district officials, the ammonia leak was reported around 10:30 AM when workers were reportedly carrying out maintenance work on a refrigeration system. The gas spread rapidly through the unit, causing suffocation and respiratory distress among employees. Rescue operations were launched immediately by the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services, along with police and medical teams.

Thoothukudi District Collector, K. Senthil Raj, confirmed that seven workers succumbed to the gas exposure on the spot, while more than 50 others were rushed to the Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital and other private hospitals. Five of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

Victims and Rescue Operations

The deceased have been identified as employees of the seafood processing unit, most of whom were daily-wage workers from nearby villages. Their names are being withheld pending family notification. Senior police officials said that the plant had been operating for over a decade and had passed safety inspections in the past.

“The ammonia leak occurred during maintenance of the ammonia compressor. The workers were not provided with adequate safety gear,” said a senior official from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The official added that an investigation has been ordered to determine the exact cause and whether negligence was involved.

Response and Investigation

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He also directed the district administration to ensure the best medical treatment for the injured. The state government has ordered a high-level probe by the Tamil Nadu Labour Department and the Factories Inspectorate.

“We have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Factories Act against the management of the unit,” said Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police, S. Jayakumar. The plant has been sealed pending further investigation. The SIPCOT area witnessed panic among local residents, though officials confirmed that the leak was contained and did not spread beyond the factory premises.

Impact and Safety Concerns

Ammonia gas is highly toxic and can cause severe respiratory damage, blindness, and death if inhaled in high concentrations. Industrial safety experts have repeatedly flagged the lack of proper safety protocols in many food processing units in Tamil Nadu. This incident has once again highlighted the need for stringent enforcement of safety norms in industrial zones.

According to data from the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services, there have been at least 12 reported ammonia gas leaks in the state over the past five years, resulting in a total of 23 deaths. The Thoothukudi incident is the deadliest single leak in recent memory. The opposition parties, including the AIADMK and the BJP, have demanded a thorough inquiry and compensation for all affected families.

The district administration has set up a helpline for affected families and is conducting awareness programs on industrial safety. Meanwhile, the families of the deceased have staged protests outside the plant, demanding stricter action against the management.
