In a tragic incident on the Masrund-Hamal road in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, seven people were killed after their vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge. The accident occurred late on Thursday evening, sending shockwaves through the region.
Details of the Incident
The vehicle, a utility van, was carrying passengers when it lost control on a sharp curve. According to local police, the driver apparently misjudged the turn, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and fall approximately 200 meters into the gorge. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the site.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud crash before the vehicle disappeared from view. Local villagers were the first to respond, alerting authorities and attempting to assist the victims. The challenging terrain and darkness hampered initial rescue efforts.
Rescue Operations
Police and disaster response teams reached the spot early Friday morning. By then, all seven occupants had succumbed to their injuries. The bodies were retrieved using ropes and stretchers, a painstaking process due to the steep and rocky slope.
Senior officials, including the District Magistrate of Chamba, visited the accident site to oversee the rescue and relief operations. The injured, if any, were rushed to the nearest hospital, but no survivors were found.
Government Response
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He also directed the administration to ensure proper medical treatment for any injured and to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident.
Road accidents are a recurring issue in the hilly terrains of Himachal, where narrow roads and sharp curves often prove fatal. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution, especially during the monsoon season when roads become slippery.
Victims Identified
The deceased were identified as residents of nearby villages, including the driver. Their families have been informed, and post-mortem examinations are being conducted at the Chamba district hospital. The community is in mourning, with many gathering at the hospital to pay their respects.
This incident highlights the urgent need for better road safety measures in the region, including improved signage, guardrails, and regular maintenance of roads.
