Bengal Congress Expresses Concern Over SIR Delays, Calls for Supreme Court Intervention
The Bengal Congress party has raised significant concerns regarding potential delays in the Supplementary Inclusion of Electors (SIR) process. On Tuesday, the party formally flagged these issues and urged the establishment of a clear deadline for the completion of the SIR procedure to ensure electoral integrity and timely elections.
Warning of Prolonged Electoral Exercise
Prasenjit Bose, the chairperson of the party's SIR panel, issued a stark warning about the consequences of not setting a definitive timeline. "Unless a deadline is set by the Supreme Court for SIR completion, the process of publishing supplementary lists on a continuous basis may turn out to be a prolonged exercise," Bose stated. He further emphasized that such delays could even disrupt the assembly election schedule, creating uncertainty and potential chaos in the democratic process.
Appellate Remedies at Risk
The party highlighted another critical issue related to the SIR process. They pointed out that appellate remedies for wrongly excluded electors might become constrained due to the absence of a clearly synchronized deadline. This lack of coordination could affect the linkage between final roll publication, supplementary lists, and election notification, potentially disenfranchising eligible voters.
The Bengal Congress's appeal underscores the importance of a structured and timely electoral process to uphold democratic principles and ensure fair representation in upcoming assembly elections.
